- To build upon children’s knowledge and understanding from year 1 to year 6.
- To become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics.
- To develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly.
- To reason and problem solve by applying mathematics to a variety of increasingly complex problems.
- To foster the Growth Mindset traits of being resilient and showing determination, giving all children the ability to reason and problem solve with confidence.
- To foster a love of learning and create a sense of enthusiasm for maths
Implementation
- Daily maths lessons including extra time dedicated to the securing the children’s fluency with mental maths
- Well planned sequences of learning support children to develop and refine their maths skills
- Small, coherent steps are planned for allowing all children to access each objective
- Reasoning and problem-solving activities regularly built into lessons
- Differentiated lessons to ensure there is appropriate challenge for all learners
- Concrete manipulatives and pictorial representations to support conceptual understanding and to make links across topics.
Impact
- Children are able to independently apply their knowledge to a range of increasingly complex problems
- Children are reasoning with increased confidence and accuracy
- Children are confident in their own learning and actively participate in mathematical discussions showing an understanding and enjoyment of maths
