MATHS at Marsh Gibbon CE School

At Marsh Gibbon, our Mastery Maths Curriculum has been developed to ensure that every child can achieve excellence in maths.

Intent
  • To build upon children’s knowledge and understanding from year 1 to year 6.
  • To become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics.
  • To develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly.
  • To reason and problem solve by applying mathematics to a variety of increasingly complex problems.
  • To foster the Growth Mindset traits of being resilient and showing determination, giving all children the ability to reason and problem solve with confidence.
  • To foster a love of learning and create a sense of enthusiasm for maths

Implementation
  • Daily maths lessons including extra time dedicated to the securing the children’s fluency with mental maths
  • Well planned sequences of learning support children to develop and refine their maths skills
  • Small, coherent steps are planned for allowing all children to access each objective
  • Reasoning and problem-solving activities regularly built into lessons
  • Differentiated lessons to ensure there is appropriate challenge for all learners
  • Concrete manipulatives and pictorial representations to support conceptual understanding and to make links across topics.

Impact
  • Children are able to independently apply their knowledge to a range of increasingly complex problems
  • Children are reasoning with increased confidence and accuracy
  • Children are confident in their own learning and actively participate in mathematical discussions showing an understanding and enjoyment of maths
All of these combine together as the children explore connections and solve problems for the first time - building a love of learning by succeeding together.
