ART & DESIGN at Marsh Gibbon CE School
INTENT
Art and Design in Marsh Gibbon CE School is based around the belief that creativity is in every child. Creativity, through art, craft and design is valued and celebrated by the school community.
Our Art and Design curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We want pupils to develop skills and explore a range of techniques in drawing, printing, painting and working in three dimensions. They will be encouraged to explore a range of tools, media and materials. Pupils learn to appreciate and analyse the creative works of others using subject specific vocabulary. They are taught how art and design reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
IMPLEMENTATION
In EYFS, whilst learning is often child-led, we use supporting resources from AccessARt. Activities are open-ended, encouraging the playful exploration of materials, processes and ideas. This nurtures dexterity skills, promotes an early understanding of visual literacy skills, and begins to build the child's confidence in their ability to make a personal, creative response to stimuli.
Children in KS1 and KS2 are introduced to each of the key areas of Art and Design, ensuring coverage of the National Curriculum. We use AccessArt resources which outline, for each year group, the pathway of learning and where this will be taught through the year. This ensures that children develop a range of skills and have the opportunity to explore a variety of materials on their journey through the school. Children engage in an Art and Design topic each term, alternating half termly with Design and Technology. We work in mixed year groups on a rolling curriculum basis to allow the opportunity for collaboration.
The children are encouraged to make their own choices and to think critically through a range of “I can…” statements for each pathway. They will study a range of contemporary and more traditional artists, designers and craftspeople to learn from the way they see the world.
IMPACT
The impact of our Art and Design curriculum will be that pupil’s abilities develop as well as their self-belief. We will nurture their talent and interests, and most importantly allow them to see art as a way to express their ideas and thoughts about the world.
Children will be involved in the evaluation, dialogue and decision making about the quality of their outcomes and the improvements that they need to make; taking ownership of their sketchbooks where appropriate. They will have knowledge of both traditional and contemporary artists and will be inspired by their work.
