Our IntentTo develop a deep understanding of Britain’s past and the wider world, helping children to:
- Mirrors: See reflections of their own lives, communities, and experiences in history.
- Windows: Gain insight into different cultures, societies, and historical events across the world.
- Doors: Explore the complexity of change, diversity, and relationships over time, fostering curiosity and critical thinking.
Implementation
- Deep Learning Blocks: History is taught in focused blocks to develop understanding and achieve depth.
- Assessments & Questioning: Regular pre- and post-assessments, ‘Flashback 4’ starters, and targeted questions support learning and embed knowledge.
- Chronological Understanding: By Year 6, children have a clear understanding of British history from the Stone Age to modern day, alongside world history topics like Greece and the Shang Dynasty.
- Cross-curricular Links: Strong connections with English and other subjects, plus outdoor learning opportunities, including trips and local history exploration.
- Inclusion & Progression: Planning considers varying abilities, ensuring all children can achieve and demonstrate understanding.
