Welcome to Foxes Class
Our Team
Our Class Teacher is Mrs Owens, and Mrs Thompson is our Teaching Assistants.
English
The book we will be reading this term is called The Curse of the Maya. We will be using this as our key text to extrapolate pieces of writing on. We will be focusing on predicting the story, creating holiday brochures for Guatemala and exploring diary entries. Our SPaG focuses this term will be: colons and semi-colons; Verb prefixes ‘-dis’, ‘-de’, ‘-mis’, ‘-over’, or ‘-re’; relative clause and relative pronouns; parenthesis using brackets, dashes and commas; and converting nouns or adjectives into verbs using ‘-ate’, ‘-ise ‘or ‘-ify’.
Reading
Transcription/Reading focusing on VIPER skills • Drawing inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justifying inferences with evidence. • Discuss and evaluate how authors use language, including figurative language, considering the impact on the reader • Provide reasoned justifications for their views • Summarising the main ideas drawn from more than 1 paragraph, identifying key details that support the main ideas • Preparing poems to read aloud and to perform, showing understanding through intonation, tone and volume so that the meaning is clear to an audience
Maths
In maths, we will start the term looking at decimals and then move onto looking at the properties of shapes. For decimals, we will be solving problems involving numbers up to 3 decimal places, add and subtract decimals and multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 100. In our shape unit, we will identify 3-D shapes, including cubes and other cuboids, from 2-D representations, draw given angles, and measure them in degrees (o), use the properties of rectangles to find missing lengths and angles and distinguish between regular and irregular polygons based on reasoning about equal sides and angles. We will also identify angles at a point and 1 whole turn (total 360o); angles at a point on a straight line and half a turn (total 180o); and other multiples of 90o.
RE
“What would Jesus do?” is our Key Question this term in R.E. By half term, the children will be able to take account of context suggesting meanings of Gospel texts, compare their ideas with ways in which Christians interpret biblical texts and relate biblical ideas, teachings or beliefs (for example, about peace or forgiveness) to the issues in their own lives, community or world today.
PHSE/Healthy Minds
Explore the benefits of being outdoors and how to manage risks • Understand how the body’s immune system and vaccinations can prevent bacteria and viruses • To know to the prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses with an everyday hygiene routine
History
Linking to our class book, The Curse of the Maya, our history for this term will be The Maya Civilization. We will be exploring where the Mayas originally came from, understanding what daily life for Mayas looks like including their social class and look at Maya beliefs. Finally, we will find out what food The Maya ate and why certain foods were more important to them.
Science
In science, we will be focusing on properties of materials. We will be comparing and grouping everyday materials based on their properties and using this knowledge, we will give particular uses of everyday materials. We will also understand that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution, investigate how to separate different materials and explore reversible and irreversible changes.
Art
Create bunting which links to the Queen • Add tone to drawings using cross hatching, blending, stippling. Contour-hatching and scumbling • Draw a picture of an orchid based on still life
P.E.
On PE days, the children will need to come to school dressed in their PE Kit. PE will be on a Monday and on a Friday.
Home Learning
We have a choice of four tasks to choose from a Pick’n’Mix sheet. All children are expected to read at home at least 4 times a week as well as completing their Times Tables Rockstars too.
Parent Partnership
I am always happy to discuss anything with parents and carers to help to support children in learning or to provide pastoral support. I aim to be on the door most days after school to provide an easy point of access. If a face-to-face meeting is not possible or appropriate, please send an email to the office.
If you are interested in supporting the class, either regularly or for a standalone session, with your time for reading or a particular skill you have please do let me know. We are very grateful for any assistance.
