Welcome to Year 3
Our Team
Miss Exley is our Class Teacher and Mrs Thripland is our Teaching Assistant.
Groovy Greeks
We are very excited about our autumn term history topic all about the Ancient Greeks. Groovy Greeks kicked off with our ‘Groovy Greeks Day’ on the first Monday of term. We had great fun wreath making, food tasting, Greek dancing and learning about the Greek alphabet!
English & Reading
During the autumn term, we will be basing our English lessons on the texts: Aesop’s Fables, retold by M. Rosen and Beasts of Olympus by Lucy Coats, with a focus on Greek Myths and Legends. We will be practising a variety of comprehension (VIPERS) skills including: inferencing and predicting and we will also be covering a number of vocabulary, grammar and punctuation objectives, such as: using a wide range of conjunctions, punctuating direct speech and generating expanded noun phrases with adjectives, verbs and nouns.
Reading is such an important skill; it really unlocks all areas of the curriculum. We would ask parents to hear their child read daily, 5-10 minutes a night is all that is needed. As well as supporting your child read words, it is also useful to ask questions and check your child’s understanding of the text.
Maths
Throughout this term, we will be covering: place value, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. We will also have daily fluency sessions, whereby we will practise and develop our arithmetic skills and times tables.
Please continue to support your children’s learning by regularly asking questions or allowing them to play TT Rock Stars to improve their instant recall of the multiplication and division facts of all times tables (up to 12 times tables).
Science
Our science lessons will link to our Groovy Greeks topic, linking closely to Ancient Greek philosophers, mathematicians and scientists. We will cover a range of working scientifically objectives throughout the term.
Humanities
As already mentioned, our focus will be History this term with our Groovy Greeks topic. We will be developing our understanding of chronology and how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources. We will be noting connections, contrasts and trends over time and develop the appropriate use of historical terms as well as addressing historically valid questions about change, cause, similarity and difference and significance.
RE
‘Would celebrating Diwali at home and in the community bring a feeling of belonging to a Hindu’ is our key question for Autumn 1. After the October half term, we will be focusing on ‘Has Christmas lost its true meaning?’
PSHE (Healthy Minds)
Our focus for lessons during the first half term is: Being Me in My World. Following the half term, it will be: Celebrating Differences.
PE
This term, we will be having PE on a Monday and Thursday. The children, over the term will be covering Dodgeball, Netball, Football and Netball.
Music
We are very lucky to be having music lessons provided by Bucks Music Trust this term. The children will be learning how to play the Djembe in these sessions every Thursday morning.
Home Learning
Our Pick’N’Mix style home learning will be uploaded to Google Classroom each half term. We will have weekly ‘Home Learning Museums’ whereby the children will be able to share their completed tasks.
Parent Partnership
We strongly believe in working closely with parents to ensure all children have a positive and successful experience in their education. We welcome any information you can share about your child and their individual learning experiences outside of school. We have our ‘Red Book’ in the office where you can record any out of school experiences and successes for them to be shared in our whole school celebration assemblies on Fridays.
To keep you informed on specific activities in school, I will use ClassDojo to share news and photos of events.
