Autumn Term Butterfly Class EYFS
Welcome to Butterfly Class in the Early Years Foundation Stage. We believe in providing all children with a stimulating and nurturing environment, where children feel safe to explore new experiences and continue to develop new skills.
Our Team
Mrs Blane is the Class Teacher and is supported by Mrs. Maskell, the Early Years Practitioner. The children have P.E. sessions with Mr. Herbert, as well as Music sessions with Mrs Freeman.
Our Curriculum
The latest Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework was revised for September 2021 and covers the education and care of all children in Early Years Provision. This Framework is mandatory and sets the standards that all Early Years Providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe.
We aim to foster a love of learning in all children by providing learning experiences which engage with their interests. The children are actively encouraged to develop independence and ownership of their learning in both the indoor and outdoor classrooms.
Baseline Assessment
On entry to Reception it is statutory that we complete the Government Baseline Assessment with the children. Please refer to the documents attached below for key information relating to the EYFS and the Baseline assessment.
Autumn Term
We are so excited to finally get to know your children better in the classroom! Your child may be feeling a range of emotions and so we envisage a gentle introduction to school routines.
The first few weeks will be all about playing, settling in, making friends and exploring the school environment. We will introduce our class rules and think about how to be a good friend. The children will be playing phonics games to develop their speaking and listening skills and joining in with play based activities to develop their number sense.
During the first half term we will be looking at ‘The Colour Monster’ books by Anna Llenas to help explore and label emotions and feelings. Butterfly class will spend lots of time outside exploring as well as learning about Autumn and how the seasons change. We will also be encouraging the children to talk about themselves, their families and interests through our topic, ‘Marvellous Me.’ This topic will also provide us with opportunities to think about the senses and ways to keep our bodies healthy.
As the term progresses we will be exploring celebrations such as Bonfire Night, Diwali and Remembrance Sunday, Advent and Christmas. Some of the books we will focus on will include the ‘Funny Bones’ books by Janet and Allen Ahlberg and ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson.
As the term progresses the Children will develop their phonic knowledge and will learn how to blend and segment sounds to read and write words. By introducing the ‘Number of The Week,’ it is possible to present different aspects of a number alongside each other. For example, aspects of number recognition, number formation, counting, place value, shape and calculation can all be introduced at the same time.
Throughout the year, our topics and planning is very much driven by the interests and needs of the Children and so are quite fluid. We will be observing and assessing your child to see how we can extend their learning and identify their next steps.
Parent Partnership
We strongly believe in working closely with parents to ensure all children have a positive and successful experience in their education. We welcome any information you can share about your child and their individual learning experiences outside of school. This can be easily shared through the use of Tapestry, our online learning journal. You can also use our Class Dojo communication tool to comment on Class Story posts the teacher has shared.
Supporting Your Child at Home
We ask that you share your child’s reading book together. Try to ask your child questions about their understanding and feelings about the book. For example, ‘What do you think might happen next?’, ‘Did you enjoy this book? Why?’, ‘How is the character feeling? How do you know?’, ‘Can you think of any other stories like this?’
We want your child to have a secure understanding of numbers to 20 by the end of the year. Any activities that help your child to count carefully or recognise numerals will help. How about adding two small groups of objects – how many are there altogether? Activities can be part of play for example, sharing out toys or exploring shapes on a walk to the shops.
From time to time we may send home activities to work on together. They usually support early reading, writing and number skills.

During the Spring term in EYFS we will:
- explore books by different authors (Julia Donaldson and Roger Hargreaves) and enjoy the different stories that can be shared.
- continue our learning about the seasons to focus on Winter and Spring, also including investigating colder places in the world such as the Arctic and Antarctic and Polar Explorers.
- look at some Celebrations from around the world and compare them to the celebrations we focused on last term.
- spend some time exploring Children’s mental health week with a theme of love and kindness.
- turn into Superheroes and wow you with our super skills! We will then be exploring and testing scientific theories by conducting Experiments for Science week.
These topics are all fluid and may change or be extended depending upon the children’s interests.
