Welcome to Eagle Class
Our class philosophy is “Education is too important to be taken seriously.” In Year 6, we work hard to ensure that everyone enjoys coming to school and develops a love of learning.
Our Team
Your Class Teacher is Mr Owens and Miss Worts is our Teaching Assistant.
English
In English, we will be basing the majority of our work this term around the book Street Child by Berlie Doherty. Through this, we will work on objectives for reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Reading
Our reading focus will be a combination of retrieval, reasoning and inference skill focus with reading at speed.
In Upper Key Stage 2, we focus mainly on comprehension, deduction and reasoning as opposed to decoding. For the majority of children, this is where the greater need is in reading. Where personalised provision is required, we will also support in word level reading.
We recommend that you try to read with your child as often as possible, ideally at least three times per week. Whilst reading, you can focus on word reading alone, ask retrieval questions (where the answer is obvious in the text) or ask inference questions (where the answer is implied in the text).
We aim to check their reading records weekly, and if they have finished their book and read at least three times in the week, they will be moved to the next book in the reading scheme. Remember, school reading books are important for progressing in the reading levels, but the best practice for a developing reader is to read as many different genres and text types as possible.
Reading is, of course, a vital skill for your child’s development and a skill which provides access to other areas of learning.
Maths
This term, we will be learning about fractions and measurement. In fractions, we will be learning about using the four operations with fractions as well as sorting and ordering them. As well as this, we will be looking at the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. In measurement, we will be converting units. This will mainly consist of conversion between metric units, but we will also learn about some imperial measurements.
History, Geography and Science
In Year 6, we spend odd terms (Autumn 1, Spring 1 and Summer 1) learning about science and even terms (Autumn 2, Spring 2 and Summer 2) learning about history and geography. This allows us to explore our topics much deeper way.
This half term, we will be comparing people and places. We will begin by researching our own local area and comparing it with an urban area in England. We will then look at a range of different locations from around the world and the people who live in them.
R.E.
In R.E. will be focusing on the Key Question “What does it mean if God is Holy and loving?” We will begin by defining the terms Holy and loving and look for examples in Bible stories to support this assertion. We will then compare and contrast the Christian view of God with other religions and find our own meaning and answer to the key question.
P.E.
We have P.E. twice a week: on Tuesday and Friday. The timetable is not set in stone, so keep an eye on ClassDojo for any changes to this. As children start to hit puberty during Upper Key Stage 2, it is also important that PE kits are taken home to be washed after all PE lessons.
Healthy Minds (PSHE and Citizenship)
Our focus in Healthy Minds this term will be living in the wider world. We will focus on recognising and celebrating difference and diversity in the world around us. We will also look at values (ranging from Fundamental British Values through to personal values) and the protected characteristics. To finish the topic, we will revisit what is meant by stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination and what role we can play in reducing these.
Homework
Homework will be communicated through Google Classroom. This will include weekly spellings, comprehension, times tables practice and maths work. The times tables practice will be through Times Table Rockstars and the maths homework will either be through Mathletics or MyMaths.
Parent Workshops
We aim to offer a variety of parent workshops through the year in order to offer help and advice in supporting your children. The purpose of these sessions will be decided through the year to ensure that they best match the needs of the class.
In Year 6, we aim to hold parent sessions on:
Parent Partnership
I am always happy to discuss anything with parents and carers to help to support children in learning or to provide pastoral support. I would usually aim to be on the door after school to provide an easy point of access, however this is not going to be possible for the time being. At present, please contact me through ClassDojo available. If you would prefer a face-to-face meeting, it may be possible to organise a virtual meeting through Google Meet.
If you are interested in supporting the class, either regularly or for a standalone session, with your time for reading or a particular skill you have please contact Mr Owens to see when would be a suitable time for you to visit the class. We are very grateful for any assistance and look forward to such a time that we will be able to welcome visitors back into our classroom!
