Welcome to Eagle Class
Our class philosophy is “Education is too important to be taken seriously.” In Year 6, we work hard to ensure that everyone enjoys coming to school and develops a love of learning.
Our Team
Your Class Teacher is Mr Owens and Mr Williams and Mrs Thompson are our Teaching Assistants.
English
In English, we will be basing our work this half term around the Hobbit. Through this, we will work on objectives for reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Reading
Our reading focus will be a combination of retrieval, reasoning and inference skill focus with reading at speed.
In Upper Key Stage 2, we focus mainly on comprehension, deduction and reasoning as opposed to decoding. For the majority of children, this is where the greater need is in reading. Where personalised provision is required, we will also support in word level reading.
We recommend that you try to read with your child as often as possible, ideally at least four times per week. Whilst reading, you can focus on word reading alone, ask retrieval questions (where the answer is obvious in the text) or ask inference questions (where the answer is implied in the text).
We aim to check reading records weekly. Children should aim to read at least four times per week. Remember, school reading books are important for progressing in the reading levels, but the best practice for a developing reader is to read as many different genres and text types as possible.
Reading is, of course, a vital skill for your child’s development and a skill which provides access to other areas of learning.
Maths
This term, we will be learning about perimeter, area, volume, statistics and geometry . We are following the White Rose Hub approach to maths, meaning that topics will be covered in blocks at depth.
History, Geography and Science
In Year 6, we spend half of each term focusing on history and geography, and the other half focusing on science. This half term is our science focus.
We will be learning about classification, through which we will learn about Carl Linnaeus’ system of classification and the difference between scientific and non-scientific classification methods.
Our second science topic is evolution and inheritance, in which we will learn about Charles Darwin and what is meant by adaptation. We will look at different animals - real and imaginary - and consider how they may have adapted over time.
R.E.
In R.E. will be focusing on the Key Question “How can following God bring freedom and justice?” To do this, we are going to define the words “freedom” and “justice” before looking at how the story of Moses relates to this.
P.E.
We have P.E. twice a week: on Monday and Friday. The timetable is not set in stone, so keep an eye on ClassDojo for any changes to this. As children start to hit puberty during Upper Key Stage 2, it is also important that PE kits are taken home to be washed after all PE lessons.
Healthy Minds (PSHE and Citizenship)
This term, we will be learning about the media and sharing information online. We will learn about the BBFC and PEGI age rating systems and try to age rate a range of media ourselves. We will also learn about appropriate and inappropriate sharing of information online and consider the importance of being a critical media consumer – both online and in the “real world.”
Home Learning
Home learning will be communicated through Google Classroom through our half-termly pick ‘n’ mix sheets. Times tables practice will be communicated through Times Table Rockstars.
Parent Workshops
We aim to offer a variety of parent workshops through the year in order to offer help and advice in supporting your children. The purpose of these sessions will be decided through the year in order to ensure that they best match the needs of the class.
In Year 6, we aim to hold parent sessions on:
Parent Partnership
I am always happy to discuss anything with parents and carers to help to support children in learning or to provide pastoral support. If you would like to meet, please contact the office to arrange this.
If you are interested in supporting the class – either regularly or for a standalone session; with your time for reading or a particular skill you have – please contact Mr Owens to see when a suitable time would be for you to visit the class. We are very grateful for any assistance and look forward to welcoming visitors back into our classroom!
