Welcome to Fox Class

Our Team
Our Class Teacher is Miss Fitzpatrick.  Mrs Thompson and Mr Hankins are our Teaching Assistants.

English

In English, we will be continuing to look at Tom’s Midnight Garden this term. We will be writing diary entries as different characters and changing chapters to suit the point of view of a specific character. We will be writing persuasive letters, creating the story for Rip Van Winkle and write an autobiography for Mrs Bartholomew. Finally, we will compare the book to the film and create a graphic novel of the book. In SPaG this term, we will be revising parenthesis, relative clauses and speech punctuation. I will be introducing how to punctuate bullet points correctly and the use of a colon and semi-colon.

Reading
Our reading focus will be a combination of retrieval, reasoning and inference skill focus with reading at speed.

In Upper Key Stage 2, we focus mainly on comprehension, deduction and reasoning as opposed to decoding. For the majority of children, this is where the greater need is in reading. Where personalised provision is required, we will also support in word level reading.

We recommend that you try to read with your child as often as possible, ideally at least three times per week. Whilst reading, you can focus on word reading alone, ask retrieval questions (where the answer is obvious in the text) or ask inference questions (where the answer is implied in the text).

We aim to check their reading records weekly, and if they have finished their book and read at least five times in the week, they will be moved to the next book in the reading scheme. Remember, school reading books are important for progressing in the reading levels, but the best practice for a developing reader is to read as many different genres and text types as possible.

Reading is, of course, a vital skill for your child’s development and a skill which provides access to other areas of learning.

Maths

In maths, we will be looking at percentages and decimals. We will begin by reading and write decimal numbers as fractions and recognising and using thousandths and relate them to tenths, hundredths and decimal equivalents. The we will look at rounding decimals with 2 decimal places to the nearest whole number and to 1 decimal place and read, write, order and compare numbers with up to 3 decimal places. We will use our knowledge of decimals to solve problems involving number up to 3 decimal places. Next, we will move onto percentages by recognising the per cent symbol (%) and understand that per cent relates to “number of parts per 100”, and write percentages as a fraction with denominator 100, and as a decimal fraction. We will use this knowledge to solve problems which require knowing percentage and decimal equivalents of 1/2, 1/4, 1/5, 2/5, 4/5 and fractions with a denominator of a multiple of 10 or 25.

Science, History and Geography
In Year 5, we focus on either Science or history and geography every half term. This ensures we can ‘dig deeper’ into our lessons and allows time to develop different skills. This term we are looking at forces and light in science. For forces, we will look at explaining that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object, identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces and recognise that some mechanisms including levers, pulleys and gears allow a smaller force to have a greater effect. For light, we will look at recognising that light appears to travel in straight lines, use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye and explain that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes.

R.E.
‘What did Jesus do to save human beings?’ is our Key question for R.E. We will explain what Christians means when they say that Jesus’ death was a sacrifice using theological terms, suggest means for narratives of Jesus’ death/resurrection comparing their ideas with ways in which Christians interpret these tests and make clear connections between the Christian brief in Jesus’ death as a sacrifice and how Christians celebrate Holy Communion/Lord’s Supper.

P.E.
On PE days, the children will need to come to school dressed in their PE Kit.

PSHE and Citizenship
In PSHE this half term, we will be learning about managing risks. To begin with, the children will learn basic first aid, focusing on DRS ABC, bleeding, CPR and chocking. We will look at positive and negative risks and the risks which are around is in every day life. We will discuss people who keep us safe and look into how to minimalise the risks relating to a mobile phone.

Homework
Homework will be communicated through Google Classroom. This will include weekly spellings, comprehension, times tables practice and maths work. The times tables practice will be through Times Table Rockstars and the maths homework will either be through Mathletics or MyMaths.

Parent Partnership
I am always happy to discuss anything with parents and carers to help to support children in learning or to provide pastoral support. I aim to be on the door most days after school to provide an easy point of access, and ClassDojo is available as an additional means of communication if a face-to-face meeting is not possible or appropriate.

If you are interested in supporting the class, either regularly or for a standalone session, with your time for reading or a particular skill you have please contact Mr Owens to see when would be a suitable time for you to visit the class. We are very grateful for any assistance.

Supporting Your Child at Home
Our experience has shown us that the support children get from home has a positive impact on their learning.  Here are some websites which parents and carers may find useful:
